AJS DETAILING · GLASS CARE CLINIC

Why Your Windscreen Still Looks Smeary After Cleaning

The glass looked clear on the drive. Then low autumn sun found every streak. Before reaching for more product, stop and identify what has actually stayed behind. A smear that moves with your cloth needs a different response from a fixed water mark, mist on the inside or a stripe left by a wiper.

This is a troubleshooting guide for when cleaning has not worked, rather than another complete washing routine. Make one change at a time so you can tell what helps.

Moves with the cloth? Check residue and fibres
Only at the edges? Check reach and technique
Stays in one place? Check the surface first

First, find the side with the problem

Park safely and inspect the windscreen from inside and outside. Clean a small area on one side, then check whether the mark changes. For a useful clue, finish with vertical strokes inside and horizontal strokes outside. The direction of any remaining streaks can help you locate them. It is a guide, not a diagnosis.

Interior film and fingerprints often need attention on the cabin side. Outside, road spray, dried droplets and wiper residue may be involved. Condensation is different again: use the vehicle’s demisting and ventilation controls, and investigate recurring damp rather than treating every cloudy patch as dirt.

If the smear moves, check the cloth

A cloth used on dashboard dressing or wax can carry residue onto glass. Set aside clean cloths for windows and keep them away from other detailing jobs. Fold to expose a fresh face, change sides frequently and replace a cloth that becomes dirty or too damp to finish cleanly.

Keep a separate dry cloth for the final pass. If the same swipe keeps returning, try a fresh cloth before adding anything else. Wash reusable cloths according to their care instructions and keep grit out of the fibres.

The AJS Super Soft Polishing Cloths listing includes use on suitable glass and recommends a clean side or fresh cloth for final buffing. They are plush polishing cloths, not a dedicated glass cloth or a guaranteed streak free solution.

If a cloudy film returns, use less and finish properly

Too much product gives you more residue to remove. Follow the instructions for your chosen glass cleaner, including where and how to apply it. Use a product confirmed suitable for that surface rather than substituting an interior dressing or an all purpose mixture.

Work on cool glass out of direct sun, in manageable areas. Finish each area before moving on. Avoid spraying dashboard surfaces, screens or electrical controls. If the cloth is just spreading moisture around, pause and change it. More pressure is not a substitute for removing residue.

If only the edges look dirty, change your approach

The lower inside corners are easy to miss because the dashboard limits your reach. Work while parked, approach from the passenger side if easier, and use a folded cloth to reach the edge without dragging dirt from surrounding trim onto the glass.

Check the upper edge and corners from a second angle. Outside, a recurring arc or band after the wipers run points you towards the blade contact area as well as the glass. Follow the vehicle guidance for blade care and replacement. Do not keep scrubbing one patch in the hope of fixing a worn blade.

If the mark stays put, cleaner and polish are different steps

Ordinary cleaning comes first. AJS Glass Polish is a separate treatment listed for hazy film, road grime, water marks and mineral deposits on suitable vehicle glass. It is not an everyday glass cleaner, scratch repair or an anti fog treatment.

The current directions specify clean, dry, cool glass, a small amount on a microfibre applicator or foam polishing pad, overlapping circular motions and removal with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. Follow the label and confirm suitability before starting.

Know when to stop

Tint film, specialist coatings and treated glass need their own care guidance. Do not assume polish is compatible: check with the film or coating supplier first. Persistent fixed marks, scratches, chips or cracks need appropriate specialist advice rather than increasing pressure or trying abrasive household remedies.

Before driving, inspect the full view from the normal driving position, including corners. Do not set off while smears, mist or glare prevent a clear view.

Your quick reset

  • Identify the side.
  • Change the cloth.
  • Check product amount.
  • Reach the corners.
  • Confirm surface suitability.
  • Inspect before driving.
